The Artful Horse: Upstate Barns. Photos by  Wells Horton.

In its bones – the hand-hewn timbers and weathered sides – a wooden barn says something about craftsmanship and pride in the most humble of buildings.

Through the lens of photographer Wells Horton, it also says something about the simple beauty of New York’s vanishing rural landscape.

Horses seek shelter in a mosaic of stone foundation, graze in the shadow of history. But look carefully at the old barn with its gap-toothed planks and hayloft open to the snow. Someone, once, cared enough to frame the gable end with an arch.

Listen closely and you might hear the echo of hammers swinging, the tread of countless hooves.
